Spiritual Poem by Abdullah Ibn Al-Mubarak

"When the night is completely dark,     "It finds them staying up in the night,     "Fear has chased away their sleep,     "So they stay up,     "While those who feel secure in this life,     "Quietly sleep on."     "O! Worshipper of Haramayn (two holy mosques) if you were to see us,     "you will know that you are playing with your worship.     "For the one who dyes his face with his tears,     "then our necks are dyed with our blood."   Finally, ponder over the words of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) who counseled us to "shed tears of regret regarding past sins you committed knowingly, and those you do not recognize."

Charity Extinguishes the Anger of the Lord

Masrūq (RA) said: Sufficient as knowledge for a person is that he fears Allah, and sufficient as ignorance for a person is that he feels impressed with the knowledge he has. Sulaymān b. Mūsā [RA] said: When you fast, your hearing and sight should also fast, and your tongue should fast by keeping away from lies; and do not harm your servant. Don’t let the day you fast be the same as the day you don’t fast. ‘Ikrimah, Sumay’ and Kurayb report that Ibn ‘Abbās – Allah be pleased with them – said to them: Marry, for if the servant of Allah commits fornication Allah snatches the light of īmān from him, and may or may not return it to him. Abū Ḥamzah Al-Thumālī narrates that ‘Alī b. Ḥusayn used to carry bread on his back in the darkness of the night and follow the poor people (to give it to them). He used to say, “Charity in the darkness of the night extinguishes the Lords anger.” A fire once broke out in a house where ‘Alī b. Husayn – Allah have mercy on him – was prost...

Islam Boils Down to Qur’an and Sunnah

Abu Al-‘Āliyah reports that a man once asked ‘Ubay b. Ka’b – Allah be pleased with him – for advice. He said: Take the Book of Allah as your leader (imām) and be pleased with it as a judge and ruler. It is what your Messenger left amongst you. It will be an intercessor for you. It is to be obeyed. It is a witness never doubted. In it is a mention of you and those before you, and judgment for whatever happens amongst you. And in it is news about you and whatever will come after you.   Abū Al-Dardā’ – Allah be pleased with him – said: It is from a person’s knowledge and understanding that he sees to his needs first in order to turn to his prayer with a heart free of distractions.   Al-Hārith b. Qays – Allah have mercy on him – said: When intending to do something good, do not delay it until tomorrow. When involved in something to do with the hereafter, keep yourself involved as long as you can. When involved in some worldly matter, put your mind to it (...

Knowledge Is More Precious than Wealth

One of the Salaf said: “Never leave a good deed because of its difficulty, for the difficulty will eventually go but the deed will remain forever. Never do a bad deed because of its pleasure/enjoyment, for the pleasure/enjoyment will eventually go but the deed will remain forever.” []   ‘Alee Ibn Abee Taalib (RA) said: “ Verily knowledge is more precious than wealth . Knowledge   preserves you, while you preserve wealth. Knowledge judges while wealth is judged upon. The possessors of wealth have died, while the possessors of knowledge live on. Their (the scholars) bodies have passed away, but they are still present in the hearts of the people.”   Maalik Bin Dinar said: “The greatest punishment a slave (of Allah) can get is hardheartedness.”   Al-Haafidh Nu’aym Ibn Hammaad said: “Whosoever claims that Allaah resembles His creation has disbelieved, and whosoever denies whatever Allaah described Himself with has also disbelieved. An...
